Hari and Deepti Paper Light Boxes
Paper craft is an extremely interesting (and unfortunately sometimes overlooked) medium, in which the artist utilizes paper in creating an object or a scene. Hari and Deepti are a pair of married artists who are based in Mumbai. Since then, their art has been featured in a wide array of galleries and articles. Hari and Deepti's paper light boxes use paper as a way of creating a scene that is simultaneously 2D and 3D.
Their art is mainly made through the layering of cut paper and shining a light behind it, creating depth as well as a dream-like feel. The paper itself is watercolour paper which is cut to create silhouettes of subjects, which is then placed in a shadow box and layered to give it a 3D effect. Lastly, they shine a light (sometimes coloured) behind the piece to create the light and shadows.
Personally, I've always loved silhouette art. It always fascinated me how so much emotion could be portrayed without facial expressions but instead bodily gestures. Hari and Deepti's work relies on gesture, the balance between light and shadow, as well as depth. Each one of their pieces has a tunnel-like feel, as if the viewer is being transported into another world. I also love the simplified angular figures that gives the impression that this is a dream-like and bizarre reality. The lighting is very beautiful and dramatic, and the shadows that are casted only add to the powerful emotions of the pieces.
